Samsung will no longer manufacture phones in China

Some tech companies have been expanding production to outside of China (at least partially), mostly due to rising labor costs and the country's growing trade war with the United States. For example, Google moved Pixel manufacturing to Vietnam, and Apple reportedly wants to diversify its production. Samsung has now shut down its last remaining factory in China, but mostly because it's having trouble selling phones in the country.

Samsung has ended all smartphone production in China, according to a report from Reuters.

Android Auto Wireless now works on select Samsung Galaxy phones

Google promised over a year ago that the wireless version of Android Auto would work out-of-the-box on any Android 9.0+ phone, but that hasn't quite panned out. The only devices that have been able to use it are Google's own Pixel devices (plus the Nexus 5X and 6P), but that finally appears to be changing.

A Google support document was just updated to state that several Samsung Galaxy phones are now compatible with Android Auto Wireless, including the Galaxy S8/S8+, S9/S9+, and S10/S10+.

Instagram is finally working on app shortcuts for Android

Android added support for app shortcuts back in late 2016 with Android 7.1 Nougat, and depending on your habits, they're either some of the most important things on your home screen or they've gone completely unused. For the former, they offer faster and more precise use of your apps, saving you from wading through pesky navigation drawers or getting caught up in a news feed. Instagram may be a little late to the party, but app shortcuts are starting to show up on the Android app for a few lucky users.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 receives Android 9 Pie update

Android tablets, like their phone counterparts, receive periodic Android OS updates — albeit much more slowly. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 tablet — a flagship LTE tablet from 2017 — has now been updated to Android 9 Pie. Sure, Android 10 would be preferable, but that will probably never happen considering the Tab S3 launched with Android 7 Nougat.

We gave the WiFi-only Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 a mostly positive review when it launched.

TechCrunch editor's Galaxy Fold is already broken after one day

It appears Samsung just can't catch a break when it comes to its Galaxy Fold smartphone. After years of leaks and hype, it was finally launched earlier this year in April. Some tech journalists received their pre-production units in April only to have them break and be returned to Samsung for investigation. Subsequent leaks seemed to indicate that Samsung had figured out the reasons behind the failure and was working on a redesign for a second future launch, not unlike the Galaxy Note 7 debacle from 2016. The much-anticipated return of the Galaxy Fold was announced for September 27th with AT&T and Best Buy joining Samsung to sell the devices.

YouTube is putting massive autoplaying ads on its TV apps

Do you like seeing massive ads that take up half of your TV screen? No? Too bad, because you'll soon be forced to watch the company's signature Masthead ads on your television's YouTube app. This is bound to be a huge moneymaker for our pals at Google.

Google says that YouTube is the number-one ad-supported streaming TV platform in both reach and watch time, with TVs its fastest-growing device at 250 million hours watched per day.

Google expands Play Points program with promo codes, but you probably still can't use it

Ever heard of Google Play Points? Unless you live in Japan or South Korea, the only two countries that the rewards program is currently offered in, we're guessing you probably haven't. Anyway, Google has just added promo codes to the Play Points program portfolio.

We don't know exactly how these codes will be distributed, but they will likely be associated with promotions that Google will set up in hopes of getting more people to take part in Play Points.

ADV Screen Recorder adds internal audio capture on Android 10 thanks to new API

Among the plethora of changes coming with Android 10, there's a new API that's particularly useful for screen-recording apps. Google's new OS allows access to internal audio for accessibility purposes (in particular, the company showcased a live-transcribe service for the deaf), but of course, other apps can also utilize the API. ADV Screen Recorder is one of the first apps to take advantage of it to offer internal audio capture on version 4.1.0.

WhatsApp Beta now lets you completely hide muted status updates from view

Just like almost any other app these days, WhatsApp offers status updates eerily similar to Snapchat and Instagram Stories. People who are into this feature have had the possibility to mute certain contacts (such as their colleagues) for quite some time already. However, muted updates would still show up in the status tab, greyed out but within a separate section below all others. The latest beta (version 2.16.260) is looking to change that with an option that lets you hide muted stories altogether.

OnePlus TV will have its own remote app for easier text entry

We're just over a week away from the probable unveiling of the OnePlus TV, but as is customary at the company, little tidbits are being shared in the lead-up. The latest comes in a tweet from CEO Pete Lau and features integration between a phone and the TV that will allow for easier text entry.

This is nothing ground-breaking, of course, since the Android TV remote and Nvidia Shield TV apps already enable this kind of functionality on other devices running Google's big-screen OS.

Firefox will switch to a faster 4-week release cycle in 2020

Browser development cycles have significantly risen over the last decade, ever since Chrome entered the market with its major version updates every six weeks. Mozilla quickly followed suit to offer rapid releases with brand-new Firefox versions coming every six to eight weeks. The company has decided to step up its game and plans to release major updates every four weeks starting in 2020.

Mozilla wants its development to become even more agile so it can deliver new features more quickly, and shorter cycles will allow this to happen.

Google announces Stadia Premiere Edition as Founder's pack sells out in most of Europe

According to the official Stadia Twitter account, the Founder's Edition pack that includes the lovely Night Blue controller and 3 months of Stadia Pro for you and a buddy has now sold out in most countries across Europe. To soften the blow, a new Premiere Edition has been cobbled together that includes most of the same bits but isn't quite so appealing.

The Premiere bundle will come with the Clearly White controller instead, and although you'll still get 3 months of the Pro subscription for free, there will be no Buddy Pass with this pack.

Miss the Spotify widget? You can bring it back with Tasker and KWGT

Earlier this week, Spotify unceremoniously killed its Android widget, taking away home screen-based controls for the streaming service. Odds are that most of you didn't notice — or if you did, you probably didn't care too much since you can still use the ongoing notification's controls during playback — but for those that were upset at the loss, there's a workaround. Using Tasker and KWGT, you can re-create a convincing approximation of Spotify's lost widget.
