Weekend Deal Drops Pixel 3a to $339 ($60 Off)

Pixel 3a

The Google Pixel 3a picked up another discount this weekend for those looking to get into the Pixel experience at an even better price. Through Amazon, the Pixel 3a can be found at various prices, but the Just Black model is a cool $60 off, dropping the cost of the phone to $339.

For just $339, you can get a Google phone that’ll get prompt updates for another couple of years, has a best-in-class camera, clean software experience without a bunch of bloat, and a plastic body that is a refreshing change within an industry filled with nothing but fragile glass. Our Pixel 3a review lays it all out.

Not interested in the Just Black version? The Clearly White Pixel 3a can be had at $349 ($50 off) too. Also, the Pixel 3a XL is $34 off, in case you want something a bit larger.

New Pixel 4a Codenames Might Be Here

PIXEL 4A

Up until this point, we know very little about Google’s upcoming mid-range phone for 2020, a phone we believe will be called Pixel 4a. Other than early renders for what should be a smaller variant, the phone is still mostly a mystery.

Today, XDA revealed what it believes to be codenames for unannounced Google devices and they could be related to the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL. The names now on our radar are “redfin,” “sunfish,” and “bramble.”

The most interesting of the codenames are “redfin” and “bramble,” which XDA noted as being developed with a Snapdragon 765 (sm7250), the new mid-to-upper tier processor that Qualcomm just announced with integrated 5G. The “redfin” device is being produced by an ODM through Foxconn with Android 10, while similar evidence couldn’t be found for “bramble,” though it is being developed with both Android 10 and Android 11.

Why are these interesting? Because that’s the newest chip from Qualcomm and it has 5G. While we know that all major flagships for 2020 will have 5G, offering up a mid-range phone with 5G is a power play for those looking to get 5G into the hands of more people at an affordable price point. The only worry there would be a Pixel 4a with 5G that dramatically raises the price over that original $399 from the Pixel 3a.

The other of the three to pay attention to at the moment is “sunfish,” which appears to be powered by a Snapdragon 730 (sm7150) and could be a regular Pixel 4a without 5G. I say that only because the 730 would bring that nice balance between power, efficiency, and affordability like one might associate with the Pixel “a” line.

To recap, we have three new potential Pixel codenames to follow now, two of which might be ready for 5G, while another could be an LTE phone. No matter what, at least we now have names to be on the lookout for even if that 5G portion here worries us on pricing.

A First Look at the Galaxy S20+ Arrives With the Best Sticker

Samsung

Samsung is such a large and important company that almost nothing it makes is ever a secret. That’s ringing true once again for 2020, with the first real-life device leak of its upcoming flagship phone, the Galaxy S20, upon us. Yes, the name S20 and S20+ appear to be confirmed at this point, so stop calling the new phones “Galaxy S11.”

The big leak this weekend arrives from XDA, where they obtained a batch of photos of the device in the wild. They have both front and back shots of the Galaxy S20+, as well as a shot of the boot screen that displays the name “Galaxy S20+ 5G.”

Below, you’ll get a fairly clean look at the rear, where we have a large camera housing that includes 4 cameras, a flash, and what I’m going to assume is a microphone. Rumors suggest a 12MP standard shooter there, plus ultra-wide, telephoto, and macro lenses.

You’ll notice the Samsung logo too, along with an incredibly perfect sticker that reads, “CONFIDENTIAL,” “No photo allowed,” and “Do not leak info.” Great work, everyone. Just great.

The other photo directly below is of the front, where we can see limited bezel, a centered hole punch camera, and Samsung’s familiar One UI. It, umm, looks like a Samsung phone with super tiny bezel. The source here did mention that the glass felt mostly flat, though, and more like a Pixel 2 XL, so hopefully that means Samsung is beginning to realize what we all did years ago: curved displays are dumb.

Galaxy S20 Leak

Finally, here is the shot that confirms the name of Galaxy S20 for the line. This model here is the Galaxy S20+ 5G, which normally would hint at this being the most high-end model, only the naming is a bit different for 2020. We actually think the Galaxy S20 will be the replacement for last year’s lowest tier Galaxy S10e, so the S10 would be equal to the Galaxy S20+ (seen here), and the most premium model might be the Galaxy S20 Ultra. All clear there?

Galaxy S20 Leak

Gotta say, I’m looking forward to these phones. The S10 line-up was fantastic, yet we should see meaningful upgrades in the camera department, what may end up being a flatter display across the board, and really, really good high refresh rate displays.

AUKEY Intros ‘World’s Fastest’ Omnia Chargers, Available Later This Year

AUKEY Omnia

AUKEY introduced the Omnia Series set of chargers at CES this week, set to be available in Q2 of 2020. AUKEY is dubbing the Omnia Series the world’s fastest chargers, so already, that’s pretty exciting.

In total, there are five Omnia chargers, featuring three different output levels. The smallest charger is the 61W USB-C PA-B2 and the largest is the 100W dual-port USB-C PA-B6. There are also two 65W options available.

While the chargers are fast, they’re also quite compact. According to AUKEY, they’re up to 66% smaller than a standard MacBook Pro 13″ charger.

Be on the lookout for these to hit Amazon in Q2. Future DL Show trivia prizes? Quite possible.

Jabra Elite Active 75t Cost $200, Probably the New Active Earbud King

Jabra Elite Active 75t

If you look around the internet for “best wireless earbuds,” Jabra’s Elite line has dominated for a couple of years now. The Elite Active 65t was a pair loved by many, but since it’s 2020, we’ve got replacements on the way. Today, Jabra announced the Elite Active 75t with upgrades throughout.

The new Jabra Elite Active 75t are 22% smaller than the Elite Active 65t they are replacing. They offer up to 7.5 hours of battery life out of their case, but can then be re-charged within that case for a total of 28 hours of use. As you might expect from an “active” earbud, they are sweat and dust proof (IP57).

The Elite Active 75t provides noise-isolation with “optimal passive noise reduction,” a HearThrough tech to let you hear surroundings when needed, and access to controls through the Jabra+ app. There’s also an option to use a single earbud.

The new Active 75t will hit stores in Q2 2020 and cost $199. They’ll be available in six colors: Navy (February), Copper Black (Amazon exclusive, February), Titanium Black (Best Buy exclusive, February), Grey (March), Sienna (April) and Mint (April).

Suunto is Here With a Serious Fitness Wear OS Watch

Suunto 7 Wear OS

When I think about serious fitness tracking watches there are three companies I look to: Garmin, Polar, and Suunto. They all make great products, but to date, only Polar has pushed aside their own software to take a stab at making a true smartwatch with Google’s Wear OS. Today, Suunto makes its play.

Suunto announced the Suunto 7, its first Wear OS watch with all of the current to specs available. You get the Snapdragon Wear 3100, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 450mAh battery, GPS, heartrate monitor, barometric altimeter, NFC (Google Pay), speaker, microphone, and 1.39″AMOLED display (454×454).

The case, which is made of a stainless steel bezel and reinforced polyamide body, uses interchangeable 24mm straps, plus you get a design that is shock-proof, water-proof (50 meters), and dirt-proof. There are a variety of colors including black/lime, white/burgundy, black, sandstone/rosegold, and graphite/copper.. The watch weighs 70g.

Suunto 7 Wear OS

But can the Suunto 7 live up to the Suunto name as a fitness device knowing that Wear OS and all of its limitations are here? I certainly have worries about battery life for a watch that is probably going to be considered by fitness enthusiasts who might spend hours and hours on the road or trail, miles away from the nearest charger.

Suunto is saying that you should get 12 hours of continuous use with GPS or about 48 hours with normal daily wear. Again, knowing that almost every Wear OS I’ve tested only lasts about 24 hours with daily use and no GPS, I’ll need to test to see if it can live up to those lofty numbers.

As a sports watch, Suunto is including 70+ sport modes (running, cycling, swimming, skiing, yoga, etc.) and an offline outdoor maps mode, so you can leave your phone behind. They even included a way to boost display brightness to 1,000 nits for those outdoor moments.

The Suunto 7 arrives January 31 for $479. I’ll see what I can do to try and test one.

Samsung Confirms: Unpacked is Going Down February 11

Samsung Unpacked 2020

Samsung confirmed last night’s leak: their next Unpacked event is happening on February 11 in San Francisco.

They didn’t mention the Galaxy S11 (S20?) or Galaxy Fold 2, only that they have multiple devices to show off that “will shape the next decade of mobile experiences.”

The event kicks off at 11AM Pacific (2PM Eastern) and will be livestreamed. We’ll do our best to be there and bring you that next-gen Samsung news.

Samsung’s Next Big Galaxy Phones are Coming February 11

Galaxy S11 Launch Date

The internet proved once again tonight that it never sleeps by outing the date that Samsung will unveil its next flagship Galaxy phones. I still don’t think we’ve settled on Galaxy S11 or Galaxy S20, but we know when to clear our calendars for that bit of news.

On February 11, Samsung is going to host an Unpacked event to show off new devices. The info comes from a teaser video that was outed by @water819 and confirmed by XDA’s Max Weinbach. You can watch it below.

The video doesn’t tell us much, but the animation that leads up to the image we featured up top is somewhat revealing. The shapes of the right block that makes up the 2nd “A” in the word “Galaxy” sure does look like a square form factor you might find when a device, like the rumored clamshell Galaxy Fold 2, is folded in half. The first square for an “A” is the shape of the camera housings we have seen in early S11 renders.

I’m not saying it’s confirmed that we are getting both the Galaxy S11 (S20?) and the Fold 2 next month, but come on, you wouldn’t be shocked, right?

Samsung Shipped Millions of 5G Phones in 2019, New 5G Device Coming Soon

Samsung

As many times as we tell you that 5G is no where near worth caring about for the time being, Samsung has shown up to tell you differently. While we would say to avoid all 5G phones for as long as you can, Samsung just told us that millions of people avoided that advice.

In a statement tonight, Samsung has announced that they moved 6.7 million 5G phones in 2019. Through several available options, including the Galaxy S10+ 5G and Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, people were fine spending hundreds of extra dollars over their 4G counterparts to get next-gen connectivity. I think those people are foolish, but it’s your right to spend your money however you see fit. Do you, my good friends!

In 2020, Samsung won’t slow down on the 5G front, we know that. For one, Qualcomm will force companies like Samsung to include 5G should they opt for the Snapdragon 865. I’m sure they’ll want to go 5G anyway, as Samsung has never been one to shy away from new technologies. For example, they are already planning to launch (in Q1) their first 5G tablet early this year, the Galaxy Tab S6 5G.

So 5G is “here,” Samsung wants you to know that they are off to a decent start with it, and there will only be more in your near future.

Pixel 3 Getting Joint January and December Update in Coming Days After Delay

Pixel 3 XL

The last two months have not been typical Google months in terms of timely security updates. We saw delays to the first two Pixel 4 updates after the phone launched and appear to be under a similar delay for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with December’s patch.

Most months, all of Google’s Pixel phones are supposed to see a fresh monthly security patch within the first week of each month, but that hasn’t been happening for reasons unknown. Today is January 1, in case you didn’t realize, and there are a number of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owners who are still on the November Android update.

This morning, a reader of ours with a Pixel 3 XL reached out after Google’s @MadebyGoogle account responded to his concerns over not seeing the latest update on his phone, putting him a full month behind in updates. Google sort of acknowledged that there has been a delay, saying that there will be a “joint January and December security update” rolling out in the coming days. They’ve sent similar messages to a number of other users today.

“Coming days” in this situation should mean this coming Monday, for those not familiar with how Google’s monthly updates work.

Why the delay? We have no idea. This lengthy, month-long thread at Google’s Pixel support community is filled with Google Fi and T-Mobile customers who claim to have not received the update. It’s hard to tell if those are the only Pixel 3 users stuck on November’s update, but doing a quick search through that thread shows users swapping to different SIMs (like Verizon) or factory resetting without Fi or T-Mo SIMs active and then grabbing December’s patch.

If there are carrier delays here, it’d be nice of Google to explain further. After all, one of the major selling points of a Google Pixel phone is that you get monthly security patches at the beginning of each month. Not getting those for a month is unacceptable, especially with no explanation.

We’ll let you know once the joint December-January update arrives.

Cheers Mike!

What Did You Love in 2019 Tech?

2019

The final countdown has begun to 2020, with hours remaining until you fall asleep early and fail to stay up until midnight to ring in the new year. So to finish on a productive note these last few moments and be able to say that you did something, we have one task for you: tell us what you loved in tech from 2019.

Yesterday, I mentioned that I thought the phone scene wasn’t as exciting as it had been in previous years, but that’s not to say there wasn’t great tech released over the past 12 months.

I keep saying that the Galaxy Fold was awesome because I truly believe that. A $2,000 phone with a laundry list of issues was my favorite piece of tech from the year. That makes almost no sense, I know, particularly when you consider that I won’t even fork out the cash for one. It’s the device I wish I had right now instead of this Pixel 4 XL, yet I know so much is wrong with it that I refuse to invest. Coward, Kellen.

2019 also brought us Google’s vision of a budget phone, the Pixel 3a. It’s a hell of a value and a great phone for those not interested in spending $1,000 on a piece of tech that probably won’t be updated regularly for long. The Pixel 3a has that camera we love from Google, that clean software, and is a joy to use because it’s made of plastic. That’s not sarcasm.

We finally got a really good smartwatch.

Samsung sped up updates. OnePlus got even quicker.

Google now lets us simply shout “Stop!” at timers now instead of “Hey Google, stop. HEY GOOGLE, STOP. GOOGLE, F*CKING STOP.” That might be the biggest win of the decade.

That sweet Project Soli tech from Google made it into a phone, even if it is partial-baked and probably will never be as cool as originally shown.

Disney+!

What else? What did you live in 2019 tech?

DEAL: Unlocked Galaxy S10+ for $699 ($300 Off), Unlocked Note 10 for $749 ($200 Off)

So Christmas has passed by and you didn’t get the new Samsung phone you had your eyes set on. No problem, you’ll just have to handle it yourself. Right now on Samsung’s website, you can snag decent savings on unlocked models of 2019 flagships, including the Galaxy S10, S10+, and Note 10 series.

For specifics, buyers can get an unlocked Galaxy S10e for $599 ($250 off), Galaxy S10 for $649 ($250 off), Galaxy S10+ for $699 ($300 off!), Galaxy Note 10 for $749 ($200 off), or a Galaxy Note 10+ for $899 ($200 off). Just remember, all of these are the unlocked model prices and if you have a decent phone to trade-in, the savings are even better.

If you’re wondering if now is a decent time to buy, it’s not bad at all. Android 10 is officially rolling out to Galaxy Note 10 owners, so that’s very exciting. Appears that long gone are the days of Samsung taking forever to ship out Android updates. Very impressive.

Have at it.

DEAL: Google’s Pixel 4 Fabric Cases are 50% Off at Verizon

Pixel 4 Fabric Case Deal

Almost all of Google’s self-made accessories for Pixel phones aren’t cheap. The USB-C earbuds aren’t. The chargers aren’t. And the cases certainly aren’t. The thing is, their accessories are often some of the best fitting or nicest quality compared to 3rd party options, so when deals are here, we point ’em out.

Verizon currently has the Pixel 4 Fabric Case at 50% off for both the 4 and 4 XL. Normally $40, that means you can grab one for $19.99 in two different colors.

If interested, Big Red has the Just Black and Sorta Smokey colors available. Google also sells coral and blueish versions, though those aren’t discounted.

For those not familiar with Pixel fabric cases, this is at least the third version that Google has done for its phones. They feature a cloth-like texture or weave, fit like a glove, and offer a decent amount of protection. They look pretty slick too. In the past, some haven’t held up well after daily use (Pixel 2), but others have been great (Pixel 3). To be safe, going black here isn’t a bad idea.

Pixel 4a Likely Makes Its First Appearance

Pixel 4a First Look

2019 hasn’t quite ended and the Pixel 4a leaks have begun.

I can’t think of a better leak to send us into 2020 than the first of Google’s next phone, a phone we assume will be called the Pixel 4a. And that’s what we have today in the form a CAD render that is likely accurate.

This first Pixel 4a leak comes from @onleaks, who once again has put together renderings of an upcoming phone months before it is official or much is known about it. These are typically based off of schematics given to accessory makers who are preparing cases and such for phones well before they launch. These are rarely wrong, so for now, feel free to consider this the Pixel 4a.

What we have here is a Pixel-esque phone that has been modernized over the Pixel 3a and one that also adopts some of the design language from the recently launched Pixel 4. You have a familiar shape with buttons on the right side, that square camera housing from the Pixel 4, a top 3.5mm headphone jack from the 3a, and a rear fingerprint reader.

Pixel 4a First Look

The front of the phone is an all-display setup with single hole-punch front-facing camera. You have speaker or earpiece showing too, but no heavy forehead with Soli sensors like on the 4. I’d imagine this phone will lack the radar chip setup to keep costs lower.

You certainly have less bezel than last year’s Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, though I’d imagine most would consider these to be on the thicker side. Still, it’s a pretty clean and minimal front that supposedly features a display around 5.7″ or 5.8″.

On the bottom, you have a USB-C port and speaker grills. The device is said to measure in at 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm.

The Pixel 3a arrived at Google I/O in May of this year. With this leak showing up so soon, this kind of puts launch of the Pixel 4a up in the air. Then again, Google is terrible at keeping anything a secret and we could still have months and months to go.

With so many being frustrated by the launch of the Pixel 4, I’m going to assume this excites you. This looks pretty great, right? All-display front without the obnoxious forehead. Hole punch setup. The rear styling of the Pixel 4. AND A FINGERPRINT READER. Give it to me now.

US Unlocked Galaxy S10 Line Gets Android 10, One UI 2 Update Too!

Galaxy S10e

Now that all of the carriers models of the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and S10e have picked up the Android 10 and One UI 2 update, we were curious how long it would take for the US unlocked models to get it. As you are likely well aware, Samsung typically uses the unlocked models for beta testing purposes, only to then take weeks or months to give them the stable build long after carrier versions. It has never made any sense, but it looks like Samsung shortened the wait this year.

The US unlocked Galaxy S10 line is now receiving the stable Android 10 and One UI 2 update. Our Galaxy S10e with no SIM card in it received an update from beta to stable this morning. Others are also seeing it, even if they weren’t in the beta.

We are currently seeing build numbers of G970U1UEU2CSKP for the S10e. If you own a regular S10 or S10+ and see the update, please let us know in the comments what your build number is.

To check for the update, head into Settings>Software update>Download and install.

Sling TV Raises Prices on All Plans, Adds Free DVR

Sling TV

Sling TV, one of the original streaming TV services that has also been the most flexible, announced a price increase across all tiers this morning. It’s the latest in a string of price increases that is making cord-cutting less and less of an appealing option to those looking to shrink cable bills.

The big (pricing) news here is that Orange and Blue plans will see $5/mo increases to $30. Previously, each had been $25. Additionally, if you subscribe to both Orange and Blue, the combined package price is now $45. It used to be $40.

Other price-related notes:

  • Sports Extra is still $10 if added to either Blue or Orange; is now $15 when added to both.
  • 4 Extras Deal is now $12
  • Total TV Deal is now $25 when added to both; remains $20 when added individually to either Orange or Blue.

Pricing out of the way, there are other items here that might make you feel slightly better. Want news on channels? Sling has those. Want free DVR? Sling has that now too.

Here’s what Sling tells us about channel adjustments:

  • Sling TV added FOX News, MSNBC and CNN’s HLN to Sling Blue base service.
  • FOX Business Network (FOX Business) launched into Sling Blue News Extra.
  • Big Ten Network (BTN) will launch on Sling TV ahead of the 2020-21 college football season.
  • FXM will launch into Sling Blue Hollywood Extra, which will also add FXX, including the linear feed.
  • Nat Geo Wild is joining Sling Blue Heartland Extra, including the linear feed.
  • Sling Orange recently launched Longhorn Network and ACC Network to the service’s Sports Extra, as well as the ability to record Disney and ESPN channels with Sling TV’s Cloud DVR.

As for the free DVR, Sling customers now get 10 hours of free DVR. If that’s not enough storage, you can always upgrade further to 50 hours with DVR Plus for $5/mo. The free DVR is available to those “customers who are not already subscribed to the Cloud DVR add-on.” So if you are, maybe cancel it and get the freebie? That’s assuming you don’t need more than 10 hours.

OK, Merry X-mas.
